Passing the Mic: Amplifying Voices That Lead Us Toward Racial Unity

Why listening, learning, and letting others lead is crucial for real change.

One of the most transformative pieces of advice I’ve ever received when navigating conversations about race was simple but profound: Give the microphone away—especially to those who have lived the struggle firsthand.

That’s why I’ve intentionally shared content from voices like Dr. Derwin Gray and Miles McPherson. Not only are they theologically grounded pastors, but they’re also deeply practical in how they engage issues of racial justice and unity within the Church and beyond. Their insights consistently challenge me to move beyond sentiment into meaningful action.

Learning from leaders on the front lines

Five years ago, I had the opportunity to interview Jerrod Gunter, a dynamic inner-city youth leader from Memphis. Jerrod often speaks at Dare 2 Share events about ways racial issues have affected his ministry, including an event a few years ago in which a white police officer shot and killed a black teenager on the property of his own church. His response to that tragedy was both prayer-fueled and Gospel-centered. He also offers thoughtful reflection on how policy and action must accompany our prayers. 👉 [Watch Jerrod’s interview here.]

Today, I want to pass the mic to another leader I deeply respect: Tyree Sterling. His X handle, “@RockYourMic,” couldn’t be more fitting.

A voice for the vulnerable

Tyree has spent years investing in students as a youth leader and as a public-school anti-bullying speaker. He has also been a key member of our Dare 2 Share speaking team and the Gospel Advancing council, consistently bringing clarity, conviction, and compassion to every conversation he’s a part of.

What sets Tyree apart is his ability to root everything in the Gospel while addressing the hard realities of racism and cultural pain. His story is powerful. His advice is urgent. And his call to action is deeply practical—especially for youth leaders looking to raise up a generation that rejects racism and embraces justice as an outworking of their faith.

Practical steps for real change

Tyree doesn’t just inspire—he equips. In this interview, he lays out tangible steps youth leaders can take to influence their students, transform their ministries, and impact their communities. His wisdom is a toolkit for anyone committed to uprooting racism and replacing it with Gospel-driven love and justice.

Let’s not just talk about change—let’s make it.

For such a time as this

The Church has a critical role to play in healing wounds and confronting injustice—not merely through words, but through sustained, Spirit-led action. Tyree’s challenge reminds us that now is not the time to retreat or remain neutral. It’s time to disciple students who reflect the justice, mercy, and love of Jesus in every area of their lives.

Let’s be leaders who listen deeply, act boldly, and multiply young disciples who do the same.
