‘Be careful,’ Jesus warned them. ‘Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.’ Mark 8:15
After the feeding of the 4,000, the disciples forgot to bring all but one loaf of bread into the boat with them (there were seven basketfuls left over after Jesus miraculously fed the whole crowd with seven loaves and a few small fish). Jesus used their forgetfulness to caution His disciples to beware of the two kinds of leaven that make bad bread: the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.
Obviously, Jesus wasn’t referring to actual bread, but to their two very different philosophies of life. The disciples were puzzled, however, thinking Jesus was speaking of actual bread. I can imagine their thoughts:
Did the Pharisees and Herod come up with competing bread brands — Herod’s Finest and Legalist’s Loaf, perhaps?
Although we know Jesus was not talking about bread and yeast, we might not fully understand the significance of the yeast of the Pharisees vs. Herod. Here’s one possible interpretation of what Jesus was trying to convey to the disciples:
The Pharisees’ bad bread: legalism
The leaven of the Pharisees was legalism. They believed they could earn God’s favor through their long list of good deeds and religious rules. Legalism looks holy on the outside but is empty inside. It turns faith into performance and leads to pride in what we do instead of trust in what Jesus has already done.
Herod’s bad bread: hedonism
The leaven of Herod was hedonism. Herod was known for his pride, self-centeredness, ruthlessness, and sexual sin. This “bread” feeds the flesh but leaves the soul starving. It promises happiness but delivers emptiness.
The only true bread: Jesus
Both legalism and hedonism are bad bread that sour the soul. Only Jesus is the Bread of Life, who offers true joy, peace, and abundant life through His death and resurrection. We must feast on Him for true satisfaction.
Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’ John 6:35
So ask yourself:
- Are you devouring the bread of Herod — living for pleasure, pride, or lust?
- Or are you chewing on the bread of the Pharisees — living by a list of rules and looking down on others who don’t measure up?
Instead, feast on Jesus. Consume Him. Devour every last morsel of His grace. Why? Because only Jesus brings holiness and happiness. The yeast of the legalist and the hedonist will spoil, but the Bread of Life will satisfy forever.
For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from Heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever. John 6:55-58
