1. “I don’t have the gift of evangelism.”
Yeah, well, I don’t have the gift of mercy but I still should show it (Proverbs 14:21.) And you may not have the gift of evangelism but you should still do it (Romans 1:16.)
2. “I don’t know any lost people.”
If A = B and B = C, then A = C. If we want to be like Jesus and Jesus was a friend of sinners (Matthew 11:19) then we must be friends of sinners too. Get in proximity to the lost, make friends and then reach them.
3. “That’s the preacher’s job.”
Ephesians 4:11,12 tells us, “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ….”
We pay our preachers to get us to do the work.
4. “That’s the evangelist’s job.”
See point #3.
5. “I don’t know what to say.”
There are so many evangelism tools out there today this should not be an excuse. For immediate help download these two faith sharing apps and call me in the morning (actually call a lost friend!)
6. “I just share the Gospel with my life and not my lips.”
Then you’re like an airplane with one wing. We are called to do both!
7. “I don’t want people to reject me!”
Here’s what Jesus said about that, “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.” Luke 10:16
8. “I don’t want to just give someone some forced evangelistic presentation!”
Then don’t! Have a Gospel conversation instead of giving them an evangelistic presentation. The goal is to engage them in a dialogue, not make them listen to your monologue! Have the conversation and then give them a genuine opportunity to say “yes” to Jesus, not a pitch!
9. “Evangelism doesn’t work in a post-Christian culture.”
The Gospel always works (Romans 1:16.) But sometimes Christians don’t work hard enough to communicate this message in a way that will be heard.
10. “I have other priorities.”
Jesus told us what our number one priority should be while on this earth. He told us, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.”
The Greek word for “go” is a participle and could read “as you are going…” In other words as we are going to work, to play, to school, to Starbucks, to the movie theater, to wherever…we should be making disciples.
As someone once said “It’s the Great Commission not the good suggestion.”
