If you’ve not read this excellent book I challenge you to do so. The Call: Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of your Life is one of the most impacting books I’ve read in the last ten years of ministry. I’m not a guy who struggles with calling but, after reading this book, I found that there are a whole lot of facets of calling that I do deeply wrestle with on a regular basis. Things like competitiveness, pride and obsessiveness are all members of the enemy army of sins that seek to distract me from the core calling of God in my life.

But the biggest lesson that was reinforced in my life from The Call was that my primary calling should always first be a passion to know Christ intimately and to become like him personally. This is what Paul was referring to in Philippians 3:10-14,

“I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

When our deepest longing is to know him we can’t help but tell others about the message of his redemption. When our highest passion is to become like Christ then we will do what Jesus did. And what did he do? He made disciples who made disicples! This is why Paul, perhaps the greatest evangelist of all time, made disciples like Dunkin makes donuts. His core calling was knowing Christ and that overwhelming desire spilled over into his evangelism efforts! He wanted everyone to know him like he knew him!

Read The Call. Wrestle with your calling. Make it your number one goal to get to know Jesus and, as you do, introduce him to everyone you can!
