It’s Time to Man Up!

Rediscovering true biblical masculinity

Our culture has no shortage of definitions for manhood. Some say it’s about how much money you make, how many conquests you’ve had, or how much weight you can push in the gym. I grew up surrounded by “manly men” — bodybuilders, powerlifters, street fighters, and hunters. Although I respected their toughness, I quickly realized I didn’t fully fit into that mold. Over time, I learned a powerful truth:

Real biblical masculinity is not defined by brawn or bravado.

The Bible paints a radically different — and much more demanding — picture of what it means to be a man. True manhood is about honoring God, not impressing others. It’s about sacrifice, not swagger. It’s measured in faithfulness and love, not trophies and titles. In fact, living as a man of God requires far more courage and grit than a 12-round boxing match.

So what does true manhood look like? Here are five characteristics I believe exemplify biblical masculinity:

1. Courageous strength

Biblical manhood is courageous, especially toward those who are weak, vulnerable, or bullied. Courage is not the absence of fear — it’s doing what’s right in the face of fear. Sometimes the bravest thing to do is simply stand in the gap on behalf of another. This protective posture requires not only physical strength but also spiritual and emotional fortitude.

Courageous men don’t run from responsibility. They don’t shrink back when things get hard. They step up and act, even when it’s uncomfortable — even when it costs them something.

2. Strength under control

Biblical manhood is meek. Sadly, meekness is often mistaken for weakness. But true meekness is actually strength under control. Think of a powerful stallion under the command of its rider. The horse hasn’t lost its strength; the rider simply focuses it.

In the same way, men of God yield their power to their Heavenly Father’s direction. They don’t live recklessly, using their strength to dominate or control others. Instead, they live surrendered lives — moving when God says go and stopping when He says wait. A meek man is a disciplined man, guided by the Holy Spirit.

3. Living on mission

Biblical manhood is on mission. The men God calls are not drifters or purposeless wanderers. They live for something bigger than themselves: for the glory of God and the story of the Gospel.

Jesus gave His men a clear directive:

‘Go and make disciples of all nations.Matthew 28:19

Men on mission take that command seriously and personally. They see themselves as soldiers under orders from their commander-in-chief. Eternal impact, not temporary achievement, is their goal.

4. Refusing to quit

Biblical manhood is resilient. Every man will face setbacks, disappointments, and failures. But a true man of God doesn’t quit. He gets back up, brushes the dust off, and keeps moving forward.

Galatians 6:9 says:

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Resilience means pushing through fatigue, discouragement, and even failure, because you know God’s promises are worth holding onto. Real men stay the course.

5. Serving through sacrifice

Biblical manhood is sacrificial. At the core of manhood is service. Jesus Himself modeled this when He knelt down to wash the mud-caked feet of His disciples, just hours before He made the ultimate sacrifice on the cross. The King of Kings didn’t demand to be served — He chose to serve.

Real men don’t live for themselves. They live to serve their wives, their families, their churches, and their communities. Sometimes that means giving up time, energy, and comfort. Sometimes it means getting their hands dirty. Always, it means following the example of Christ.

The call to true manhood

The apostle Paul summed up biblical manhood powerfully when he wrote:

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love. 1 Corinthians 16:13–14

This is the essence of true manhood: alertness, courage, strength, faith, resilience, and above all, love.

So, men, it’s time to man up. Not by the world’s standards, but by God’s. The world doesn’t need more tough guys or big talkers. It needs courageous, meek, mission-driven, resilient, sacrificial men who love like Jesus.

That’s biblical masculinity. And that’s the kind of man the world is desperate for today.
