Unlikely Revolutionaries

If you had the option between fitting in with the crowd and being burned alive, which would you choose? For three young men: Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego, it wasn’t even a choice: absolutely the fire! These three lived in Babylon where King Nebuchadnezzar mandated everyone must bow down and worship a massive golden statue or die.

The problem was that bowing to the statue directly contradicted the command of God. In that moment, they had to decide whose command they would follow: King Nebuchadnezzar’s or God’s. These three were foreigners and slaves, simply making a choice, and that choice led them into a furnace so hot it killed the men who put them into it.

But their obedience saved them. God rescued them and when they emerged unharmed from the fire, Nebuchadnezzar was so overwhelmed that he decreed that anyone who spoke badly of God would face punishment. Their obedience and courage changed Babylon and inspired others to follow the glory of God.

When you decide to follow God, it makes us stand out from the crowd, and people will take notice. If you are bold in our faith and reflect it in our actions, we will change minds and hearts, while drawing closer to Christ ourselves. We hope that you will never have to face a decision like this, but know that just like for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, your faithfulness and obedience to God will not fail you.
